If I were rating on the food, I'd give 4-5 stars. However, after my last visit (which was my fourth) around 7/15/19, I found it ridiculous that Amu so poorly accommodated an onion allergy. Read on for the full (rather lengthy) story: The waitress, upon being told my mother has a severe onion allergy, became flustered and uncertain they would be able to accommodate. She was a native English speaker so it was not an issue of communication. After a bit of back and forth, she finally said she would check dishes to see if they had any onion, but still looked nervous. After we ordered, she did come back to say one of the dishes we ordered had onions so we picked another, which went off without a hitch. However, we also ordered the shrimp dumplings — the waitress did not tell us there were onions, but when they came out, they smelled very strongly of onion. My mom asked the waitress if there might be onions in it, to which she responded, "There shouldn't be." Again, a strange answer considering we told her we had to KNOW not just guess. She left and I tested a bite (I'm not allergic to onions) and it very clearly tasted of onions as well. We called her back and asked her to check on it since it was such a strong flavor. She returned about 5 minutes later and let us know that they didn't make them on site so she couldn't ask the cooks and couldn't find the packaging. In other words, she didn't check initially, and she couldn't check now. I told her my mother wouldn't be able to eat them without knowing (thought honestly I'm positive there were onions, it's a very potent taste), but she wouldn't take them off the bill as I had already eaten one. Again, the food is good, but it's a pretty basic ability to accommodate a food allergy. Was very disappointed with the waitress's customer service, which was a poor complement to an otherwise tasty meal.

So great. Always a great experience. Order omakase, definitely. And don't forget to request your sake be paired with your food- you'll taste sake like never before!

The google review is misleading. The price should be $$$ (yelp says $31-60, which is more accurate), and the menu attached on google is complete wrong, plus the link to the website doesn't work. Boulder price for sure. $26 for a mere 15 oz (450 c.c) sized hot pot (as "hot pot for 2-4" on the menu, which was super misleading to me), $12 for a 4-inch (10 cm) piece of grilled mackerel, and $3 for a tiny bowl of white rice. The ingredients might be top-end and to be honest the flavor was not bad, but are the prices reasonable? I doubt so.

I have been here literally hundreds of times, and it used to be the best restaurant in Boulder. That is now no longer the case, and it has become insulting to eat there. Amu was known for it's excellent fish and generous portions, along with a family atmosphere. We loved it for 14 years and it was the only restaurant we would go to in Boulder, it was that good. We went the other day and the there was a new "Chef" preparing the Sashimi. I am not joking when I say that he sliced the fish literally paper thin. Yes for $18 we received 6 pieces of fish, but all of those pieces put together were less than a centimeter thick (3/16 inch). I only gave two stars for the other dishes which are small but delicious. This place used to be a value (2 people would spend $160-200). Now I shudder to think what you would have to spend to actually leave and not be hungry. We spend $200 for me and my wife and had to go home and prepare a second dinner (and she weights 120lb and myself 135lb. The end of an era. But I heard the old chef Yuki left to open a place of her own, so maybe there is hope after all. I was insulted, I will not return.
